Last night on the 23rd of May Dumfries Male Voice Choir sang in their 72nd annual concert. It also marked the 75th year of the choir’s existence. Much has changed since the choir was formed all these years ago. However, I am sure that the group of choristers who sang in 1950 enjoyed the same emotions when singing to their audience as we did last night, trying to bring joy and a sense of togetherness to ours.

The evening was compared by William Williamson who is well known to us and to the border’s region. His witty and knowledgeable comments nicely tied together the evening’s entertainment.

We sang a wide range of of pieces: songs from the Shows, a trilogy of Elvis classics, several songs of American origin, some songs of a classical theme and ending the evening with a couple of choir classics. I like to refer to them as real belters, Rachie and Gwahoddiad.

In addition to the choir performances, we had guest artists; The National Youth Choir for Scotland performed in both halves of the concert delighting the audience with their beautiful performances.

Also performing was Adam Workman a young pianist shortly to study at the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow. He played a number of classical pieces and one of his own compositions to the delight of the audience.

The audience departed the concert expressing their enjoyment to us all. Not only that, when we left the building, the rain was falling, the first rain for several months. The choir can always rely on a Dumfries Male Voice Choir concert to bring a rainy night.

Join Us

We warmly welcome fresh faces, so why not come join us. Young or old, there is room for all. You don’t have to be an experienced singer or have sung in a choir before.

So what else is worrying you?

You don’t read music? Well neither do most of the choir.

You are not a really good singer? You don’t need to be; enjoying music, singing and performing is enough, although you will be encouraged to learn your section part, i.e. bass, baritone, 1st or 2nd tenor. Music

The Choir has built up a library of hundreds of pieces of music over the past 60 years, ranging from traditional to more modern, popular pieces. Our Conductor aims to choose programmes which are a blend of traditional and modern, old and new, and is always on the lookout for new material - be it a new arrangement of an old favourite or a completely new song. The Choir have several songs which can be sung without words or music or at the drop of a hat, as our conductor likes to say. So if you are in Dumfries be careful not to drop your hat, or someone may start singing at you.
